We The People

M F Husain, revered by many as India's Picasso, is no longer an Indian anymore. On Thursday Husain, who was on a self exile, driven by right-wing fundamentalist found succor with the Qatar government bestowing citizenship to India’s most renowned living legend. The 95-year old painter has been living in self exile since 2006 as he was getting hounded by Hindu organisations for his artwork depicting nudity of Hindu goddesses and ‘Bharat-Mata’.
Is Husain’s acceptance of Qatari citizenship a shame for India's free society? Does it muffle an artist’s freedom of expression? Is it a slap on the face of a nation that swears on secularism every now & then? Why did it take the Indian government so long to welcome him back to India & reassure him on his security?
What about the others who faced the same fate? The Left drove Taslima Nasreen out and the Congress banned Salman Rushdie. If assurance can be given to Husain then why not to others who are banished from our country? At the end are all of these no more than politics of intimidation?
On ‘We The People’ this week we debate QATARI HUSSAIN:INDIA’s SHAME? Your comments and feedback are always appreciated. Don’t forget to catch this debate on Sunday, 28th Feb 2010 at 8pm only on NDTV 24x7. 9 years ago
