Isn't obvious we all are racist in a sense of differentiating us from them. It is basic human nature - show me non racist people I'll show you flying white elephant.
Indians moving abroad /US are the most hollow n wicked kind. While in India they loath n discriminate, lower caste n minorities every possible way. Once in US they become an overnight liberal champion of weaker sections of society. Charity begins at home, miss.
An article completely lacking in balance. I speak as a descendant of indentured labourers mentioned by Sharmila. Why no mention of the fact that violence towards other races by Indians abroad is virtually unheard of? Violence towards Indians is the norm. In many parts of the UK, hard working Indians are subject to 'muggings' by indolent blacks who have for generations been living on welfare hand-outs! Why no mention of the fact that notwithstanding their recent arrival in the USA, UK and Canada, Indians have overtaken blacks in all spheres? Why no mention of the fact that Idi Amin, President of Uganda expelled more than 50,000 Indians simply for being Indians? As for the music that some seek to emulate, particularly the 'rap' why no mention of the fact that only idiots would wish to use the violent, misogynistic words that the blacks find acceptable? I could go on and on but Sharmila has made up her mind on the issue and wishes us to accept her interpretation as the final word!
If you discount racism, even then India is OVERFLOWING with all kinds of Prejudice, biases and double standards. Indians just LOVE the idea of "Us versus Them"
Very thought provoking article. While a sense of being a racist is inherent in everyone, even in those who insist they do not have a racist bone in their body, it is critical that from a very early age at home, in school and in the playground, it is dinned into the child that he/she is very much the same as everyone else. Color of skin, gender, religion, ethnicity and even wealth ought not to make a jot of difference in how we deal with each other. Easier said than done, however, and we all have our biases. Having spent the first 35 years in different parts of India, I found prejudices to be rampant in every sense and they are still there. In the US, except for 2-3 minor incidents over the last 34 years, I have found that my family and I are accepted for the type of people we are, despite the color of our skin and accent. I am disappointed though in many Indian origin people, including a Doctor who was on CNN recently, who have decided to play the Victim card for political reasons. Heck, Indian origin Doctors are among the most highly respected people in this country, but this Doctor is worried! That being said, many Indian origin people have carried the prejudices from their home country in the way the refer to people with darker skins and facial structure.
Racism in India is indeed unfortunate. With reference to the Northeast region it is unfortunate that successive govt in New Delhi has sought to govern the region through increasing military presence instead of making sincere efforts to integrate the region to the rest of India. Addressing such structural problem will go a long way in bridging the gap.

Good article. People should not be judged by their appearance but India uses tones of fair and lovely
